How to Include Your Dog in Your Wedding Day Without the Chaos

At Delaneys Estate, we firmly believe dogs aren't "just pets." They're family. They're the first babies. The third wheel on every Sunday coffee run. The reason your white couch is no longer white.
So naturally… they deserve a place at your wedding too.
And honestly? Some of the most emotional moments we've seen at weddings have involved four muddy paws trotting down the aisle.
But as adorable as having your dog at your wedding sounds, there's one thing couples often forget:
Dogs do not understand wedding timelines.
Which is why a little planning makes all the difference between "best day ever" and "why is the Labrador swimming in the dam during family photos?"
Here's exactly how to include your dog in your wedding day while keeping things relaxed, beautiful, and stress-free.
Choose Their Role Carefully
Not every dog wants to be the star of the show… and that's okay.
Some dogs thrive in attention and crowds. Others would prefer to nap under a tree and silently judge everyone.
The best roles for dogs at weddings are usually:
- Walking down the aisle with a bridesmaid or groomsman
- Ring bearer (if you trust them more than your fiancé)
- Joining post-ceremony photos
- Hanging out during cocktail hour
- Being part of your getting ready photos
- Wearing a floral collar or bow tie for the ceremony only
Sometimes the sweetest option is simply having them there for a short part of the day.
Assign a "Dog Person"
This is the biggest tip we give couples.
Do not assume your bridal party will magically manage the dog all day.
Your dog needs a dedicated human whose ONLY job is:
- holding leads
- toilet breaks
- water bowls
- snacks
- calming zoomies
- transporting them home when they're done socialising
Trust us… future-you will be very grateful.
Some couples even hire professional wedding pet attendants now, which honestly feels like the most genius invention ever created.

Keep Their Time Short & Sweet
Your dog does not need to stay for 10 hours.
Most dogs are happiest attending:
- ceremony
- photos
- cocktail hour
…and then heading home for a nap while the humans continue partying.
This keeps them comfortable and avoids overstimulation from loud music, crowds, and late-night dance floor energy.
Tiny flower girls throwing chicken nuggets under tables? Fun for guests. Slightly less fun for venue cleaners.
Think About the Weather
Outdoor weddings and dogs are beautiful in theory.
Until:
- black dogs overheat in summer
- long-haired dogs collect half the paddock in their fur
- someone jumps in a muddy puddle five minutes before photos
Always bring:
- water bowls
- towels
- treats
- shade options
- backup leads
- lint rollers (critical. absolutely critical.)
Tell Your Photographer Early
Your photographer will LOVE knowing your dog is involved.
They can plan:
- pet-friendly photo locations
- golden hour shots
- candid reactions
- safer group photos
- treats/squeakers for attention
Some of the most treasured wedding photos end up being the completely unplanned ones:
- your dog asleep under the bridal table
- muddy paw prints on the dress
- them staring lovingly at you during vows
- chaotic tongue-out sprinting photos
Perfectly imperfect memories always win.
Consider Your Venue Rules
Not every venue allows pets, so this is something to ask early in the planning process.
At country venues like Delaneys Estate, dogs often fit naturally into the relaxed outdoor atmosphere, especially for ceremony and photo access.
But it's important to understand:
- where dogs are allowed
- lead requirements
- cleanup expectations
- accommodation restrictions
- livestock boundaries
(Our Highland cows appreciate respectful introductions only.)
Your Wedding Day Should Feel Like You
Some couples want champagne towers and fireworks.
Some want barefoot dancing under festoon lights.
And some want their golden retriever wearing a bow tie while crying through the vows.
All are equally valid.
Your wedding doesn't need to fit a template to be meaningful. The little personal touches are usually the things guests remember most.
And if your dog accidentally steals attention during the ceremony?
Honestly… that's usually the best part.
